Ying Ma is author of Chinese Girl in the Ghetto, a book that deals candidly with immigration, race relations, and welfare. At the age of 10, Ma and her family immigrated legally from Communist China and settled into an Oakland CA slum where they were taunted as “Chinamen” by their neighbors. Rejecting the welfare state lifestyle that surrounded them, the family forged a new life through hard work, determination, and educational achievement. Ma earned degrees from Cornell University, where she became president of The Cornell Review, and Stanford Law School, after which she became a successful lawyer.

Today Ying Ma is a powerful voice on Asian policy as well as on the opportunity American still offers to those willing to work for it. Fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, Ma’s expertise on China is regularly reflected in her column at the Wall Street Journal’s China Blog.

Her remarks were recorded at the March 2015 Conservative Women’s Network luncheon, a monthly event co-sponsored by the Luce Institute and The Heritage Foundation.
