Katie Porter will be a junior next fall at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She is double majoring in Political Science and Psychology. She’s an only child and her parents, Rick and Teresa, are her favorite people.
Katie is conservative because she believes that an individual’s dream life and self-actualization can only be achieved through their own hard work, and as Margaret Thatcher said, “Our children need strong families raising them with sturdy virtues, not to be smothered in the cold arms of the state.” (Below is Katie dressed as Margaret Thatcher for Halloween).
One of Katie’s current favorite conservative women is Stacey Dash. Stacey has taken personal responsibility for herself and her life. Although she had a tough childhood, she brought herself out of poverty and never buys in to the idea that the system is against her. She knows her worth and Katie thinks that knowing your worth is needed to make any positive change in the world. Stacey is also very fashionable and graceful, as Katie got to see first-hand at the Western Women’s Summit in 2016.
Katie tries never to be a victim, and one of her favorite quotes is “One day she finally grasped that unexpected things were always going to happen in life… She realized that only control she had was how she chose to handle them. So, she made the decision to survive using courage, humor and grace. She was the Queen of her own life and the choice was hers.” – Unknown
One of her most proud moments was when her event, called Lions’ Stories, came together last year. It was a night in the school auditorium where Loyola Marymount University students with mental health challenges had a platform to speak their stories. It was intended to help end the stigma against mental illness.
Katie loves to travel. The weirdest adventure she’s ever been on was last summer while she was studying abroad at Oxford University. One weekend, she traveled to Wales and stayed in a blue yurt in the Welsh countryside. She doesn’t think she would stay in a yurt again, but it was a wonderful experience.
At school, she loves being a leader in her student senate, and enjoys spending time with her sorority sisters and being in charge of all philanthropy aspects of her sorority.
Katie is very excited to be with Clare Boothe Luce this summer to develop her leadership skills and conservative values, and learn how to better make positive change in the world.
